As Provincetown is home to many gays and lesbians, it is only logical that we include one of the most famous gay poets and writers in history. Oscar Wilde was an outspoken and flamboyant man who was ahead of his time. Wilde bucked the conventions of the Victorian era with his hedonistic lifestyle and while it may have inspired or contributed to his fantastic literary works such as "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "An Ideal Husband" it put him at odds with many individuals in English society, one result of which was a term spent behind bars.
