“They were as two birds in flight, Their paired wings soaring, Using cinnabar ink they’d write their vows, I’ll never forget you.”

 —Ruan Ji

Born in 210 in the Henan Province in China, Ruan Ji was an eccentric Chinese poet and most renowned member of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, a group of third-century poets and philosophers who sought refuge from worldly pressures in a life of drinking and verse making. His poetry is full of melancholy and has been praised for its profound view of a difficult time. His best-known collection is "Yonghuai shi" (Songs of My Heart) where he applies his brush to a homosexual theme.

“I am animated to a state of pity and fear, I stepped off the train, purged.”

 —R. Raj Rao

For years, Dr. R. Raj Rao has been the public face of gay Indian literature. The author of "Slide Show" and his searing collection of short stories, "One Day I Locked My Flat in Soul City" (1995), contains several angst-ridden gay-themed pieces. In 1996, six of Rao's poems from his still-in-progress "BomGay" were filmed as India's first gay film. Rao released his first novel, "The Boyfriend", which was widely publicized as India's first gay novel in English. It is bleak, hard-hitting and darkly funny.

The Thoreau Cottage is the largest and most luxurious room in our Provincetown inn. Separate from the rest of the buildings and located adjacent to the Namasté Spa, the cottage features a spacious bathroom with a large double shower and a comfortable sitting area with an inviting leather sofa in front of a fireplace that warms the room on those cool, Cape Cod nights. Recently updated to include a luxurious king sized bed, and fully redecorated.  The Cottage has a private outdoor garden and an outdoor shower.

The lovely bay window looks out onto our Asian Garden and the sliding-glass door leads to a private patio with mini-garden.

“Could a greater miracle take place than for us to look through each other’s eyes for an instant.”

 —Henry David Thoreau

One of the most famous poets and writers in American history, Henry David Thoreau was a native of Massachusetts and spent most of his life here. Therefore, we felt it only appropriate to dedicate a room at our Massachussets hotel to the noteworthy artist. His best known work is "Walden", an autobiographical story of life in the woods on Walden Pond, where Thoreau made his home. Another of Thoreau's works, "Civil Disobedience", was an influence for both Mahatma Gandhi, in his passive resistance campaigns, and Martin Luther King, Jr. in his quest for civil rights.

This unique room at our Provincetown inn has a spacious bathroom, wet bar and balcony. Beautiful dormer windows and french doors, with their attractive plantation shutters that filter the sunlight, a cozy sitting area and the comfy king-size bed give this room a true "at home" feel. Relax all day on the roof deck overlooking our patio and the Namasté Spa.

I can hardly wait for tomorrow, it means a new life for me each and every day.

 —Stanley Kunitz

Stanley Kunitz was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. About his own work, he said: "The poem comes in the form of a blessing-like rapture breaking on the mind. Does one live, therefore, for the sake of poetry? No, the reverse is true: poetry is for the sake of the life." Kunitz was a founder of the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, where he lived most of his later years and where he died at the age of 100 in 2006. We are proud to honor him at our Massachusetts hotel.
